young metal dj
The following is a general article on heavy metal music from the New York Times on April 29, 1984. The article is unique in that it was all the way back in the early eighties and that it interviewed a kid who had his own radio station. It can easily be seen how heavy metal is being poorly viewed in the article. For example, in the article the music is described as "a primal roar." The writer is quick to point out many of the negatives of the genre, including: "musicians have been banned from certain cities and radio stations for demonic references in their songs and bizarre behavior on stage," and that "Ozzy Osbourne is said to have bitten off the head of a live bird during a concert." Furthermore, the boy's Dad describes the music as "God-awful." To top it all off, the article has the phrase from the young disc jockey that describes heavy metal songs as a "natural drug" big and bold in the center of the article. Despite all of these negatives, the newswriter does use his interview of the metal-loving to provide another angle aside from the negativity.
