boy kills family of three
In very same year as the U.S. Senate Hearing and the PMRC, heavy metal music was claimed to be the cause of a boy who killed three others. Along with satanic beliefs, so too was there an attribution to one of the most famous heavy metal bands of all time, Iron Maiden (Cox). This situation is particularly interesting because the murderer was only fourteen years old and heavy metal was a part of his life. The news article seems to present Iron Maiden's "mascot "Eddy," an evil, skeleton-like character" as a sort of role model for the young boy in his killings:
Satanism Drove Boy to Slay 3 Court Told
Satanism and love for sinister heavy metal music drove a 14-year-old boy to slaughter a Scarborough family of three - including a 7-year-old girl - a court has been told.
The youth, who cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act, was so influenced by satanic beliefs that he frequently read from a satanic "bible." He even carved the numbers "666" - numbers that represent the devil or anti-Christ - into his chest with a knife, Scarborough Family Court was told yesterday.
The court was also told that the boy closely identified himself with the heavy metal musical group Iron Maiden and the band's mascot "Eddy," an evil, skeleton-like character featured on the band's album covers.
Arthur Bruce Irwin, 55, a flamboyant gambler, his wife Joyce, 39, and their daughter Kelly were shot to death in their fashionable Garrybrook Drive home April 12..
The youth has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder.
The court heard testimony from several youths, who said the accused led them on a grisly tour of the house to view the blood-spattered death scene.
One youth testified he received a phone call from the accused just after 7 a.m. on the morning of the killings.
"He (the accused) was yelling "I did it, I did it'," the boy said. "I said, "You did what?' He said, "I killed (the man and woman) and (Kelly).' He was yelling his head off."
The youth said he and the accused spent the rest of the day buying records and sunglasses, having lunch at a local hamburger outlet and even having their ears pierced.
When asked by Crown Attorney Ken Anthony why he failed to notify police of the murders, the youth replied: "I was good friends with him. I wouldn't do that."
In a statement to police, court was told, the accused said that he entered the couple's bedroom on the morning of April 12 with one of Bruce Irwin's rifles.
"I stood by (Joyce Irwin's) side of the bed," the statement read. "I stood over the bed for about five minutes with the gun two or three feet from (the woman's) head.
The woman "was sort of waking up. I screamed and pulled the trigger. I shot her. I saw (Bruce Irwin) waking up as the smoke cleared . . . I shot him."
The youth then said in the statement he went down to the main floor and shot the couple's daughter.
The trial has been adjourned until Nov. 20.
